We built this because organisations deserve to know what is happening with their AI data.
Not because a regulator told them to ask. Because it is their data, their employees, their customers, and their responsibility.
AI tools are everywhere. Governance is not.
In the last two years, AI tools have moved from the engineering team to every corner of the organisation. Finance uses AI for analysis. HR uses it for drafting. Sales uses it for outreach. Legal uses it for research. The pace of adoption has been remarkable.
The governance of that adoption has not kept pace.
Most organisations cannot answer three basic questions about their own AI usage: which tools are actively in use across the workforce, what happens to the data generated in those interactions, and what agreements are in place with the vendors handling that data.
This is not negligence. It is a gap that existing frameworks were never designed to fill. ISO 42001 governs how you build AI systems. SOC 2 governs your operational trust. NIST AI RMF governs model risk. None of them govern what happens when your employee opens an AI tool on a Tuesday morning.
Data generated by AI interactions does not stay where you think it does.
When your employees use AI tools, session data moves. It moves to vendor infrastructure. It moves across network boundaries. In many cases it moves across national borders. In many cases, the organisation has no visibility over any of this.
The question is not whether this is happening. It is whether your organisation knows it is happening, can evidence the terms under which it is happening, and can demonstrate to an auditor or regulator that it is happening in a way that meets your obligations.
Knowing your AI data crosses a border is a fundamentally better position than not knowing. You can make decisions. You can negotiate contracts. You can set boundaries. You can prove compliance. Organisations that do not have this visibility cannot do any of those things.

Why we built it the way we did.
Our platform infrastructure runs in Africa and Europe. The evidence we collect on behalf of your organisation stays within your acceptable regions. We do not route your governance data through jurisdictions you have not approved.
We thought carefully about the irony of using a governance tool to prove data sovereignty compliance if that tool itself did not operate with the same discipline it asks of its customers.
The certification standard, NIVAI-AGF:2026, is published independently through NIVAI, a certification body operated separately from the Nitivai platform. The standard is not a product feature. It is a framework that any organisation can be assessed against, by any registered auditor, independent of whether they use our platform.

Our mission
Every organisation that uses AI should have complete visibility over how it is used, where the data goes, and the ability to prove they have it under control.
Not because a regulator demanded it. Because an organisation that knows is in a better position than one that does not. The people whose data flows through those AI interactions deserve to have someone accountable for where it goes.
Who we are.
We have been building around one principle for six years: data sovereignty at every layer. The tools we build are designed so your data stays where you can see it, govern it, and prove it. That principle did not start with AI governance. It has been the foundation of everything we have shipped.
Nitivai was not a reaction to a trend. When organisations started facing questions about what their AI tools do with their data and found they could not answer them, closing that gap was a natural extension of work we had already been doing for years.
We are based in Johannesburg, South Africa. We do not route your data through US infrastructure. That is not an accident of geography. It is the same decision we make across everything we build.
About the name
Nitivai is formed from two words across two traditions. Niti is Sanskrit for moral order, prudent governance, and right conduct, a concept at the centre of political and ethical philosophy for over two thousand years. Vai is Portuguese for it goes, meaning forward motion, progress, continuation. The name is intentional. We work across Africa and Europe, and we wanted a name that reflected both. Not a portmanteau, not an acronym, but a founding conviction: governance that moves forward.
